"I have a 1895 Antique Walnut staircase with banister forsale still in the house. Where would be the best place to advertise it?" Be careful what you call walnut. Many Stair bannisters were mafe of chestnut which closely resembles walnut in color and density. However having worked with both I thought the chestnut softer than the walnut. Chestnut was used extensively after the chestnut blight and mush of it was milled into mouldings @ bannisters

Recently downloaded plans for a wooden Sidewalk Speedster. They call for 10" x 1 3/4" wheels with a 3/8" plain sleeve bore. I live in Hawaii and resources are limited. I have searched the web but cannot find a supplier. It is a white spoked tricycle wheel but I cannot find it locally. Any Ideas

YOu will be very hard pressed to find what you are looking for. Even newer vises are made from cast iron and come from places like China. As far as I know, even the poplular "Wilton" vises don't sell any replacement parts. In my opinion,, you should just go get a new vise. Sorry

I need to make a wishing well with an octagonal rim, using 2x6 material. How do I figure the length of each segment so that the inside dimensition is a pre determined size? I know the angles have to 22 1/2 degrees, but I am stumped as the the length. I am sure there is a formula to figure this out, but I AM STUMPED. john jkeasey@comcast.net thanks

the length is what's called the chord length of a segment of a circle. You can look up chord length calculators on google

I hear and read mention of the "golden rule" in wood working referring to dimensions of a piece furniture or cabinet. Could someone explain what the golden rule is? I do know it make reference to a ratio of height to width and depth. But what would the ratio be? For instance, 18th century furniture used a ratio of 1 unit high by .618 wide refered as the golden section. Is this the same as used today? Thanks for and all replies. Ken ken.bob@verizon.net

Make a template of your hip roof and cut the base out of your cupola. Nail 4 2x4's of a small length and attach to your roof. Set your cupola on top and nail or screw your cupola to them.
