One of the first items in a small workshop should be an efficient workbench. There are many designs for inexpensive to elaborate workbenches in such publications as ShopNotes, Woodsmith, and Wood magazines. I recently built one from 2x stock and MDF. I have been outfitting it with a side vise, beveled tie-downs, and sliding edge buttresses that can be raised on the side of the workbench when a stop is need to butt a project against, and then slid out of the way when needed. From the "scraps" left over from this project, I have been building several jigs and aids for the bench and for some of my bench tools. I will try to upload pictures of some of these in the next couple of days.
